One on One Support
PLTC’s support groups are not for everyone. Some people are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with mutual aid groups, transportation may not be available, or the survivor may not be well enough to attend a group. For these people, we offer a support relationship with a volunteer whose cancer experience closely matches that of the person requesting the match. The support volunteer provides information, encouragement and emotional support, usually over the phone although meetings between the two participants are sometimes possible. Typically, these relationships are for a short time, although long lasting friendships have been formed.
Persons interested in a one-to-one support match should contact the office. Be prepared to give specific information about your situation and what you hope to receive from the support match. We will do our best to locate a volunteer with similar experiences; however, it is not always possible to locate a good match and the procedure may take several days.
