Outreach in NM
People Living Through Cancer has an outreach program supported by grants to share the survivorship message. We Strive To:
- Help other New Mexico communities adopt People Living Through Cancer’s nationally-recognized model of peer support
- Build support networks and groups across New Mexico
- Provide training and follow-up for support group facilitators
- Network cancer survivor resources in small, rural NM communities
- Support survivorship in Indian country across the U.S.
PLTC offers leadership training, consultation and liaison to new survivor-based cancer support groups and organizations throughout New Mexico. These efforts support the implementation of our peer-led support model.
The Leadership Council was formed as part of the outreach program as a means of networking peer support leaders throughout New Mexico. Meetings are held twice a year to update work done on New Mexico's Cancer Plan and to share what is happening in the world of cancer survivorship throughout the state.
The Indian Health Service collaborates with People Living Through Cancer to bring the pueblo model, “A Gathering of Cancer Support” to Indian Country. Several New Mexico Native American pueblos provide this cancer survivorship model for their people that includes:
- Educational programs for those dealing with cancer
- Cancer support groups and one-on-one support
- A lending library
- Patient advocacy to help clients participate fully in available healthcare resources, including Keres-English translation
- Transportation to screenings, treatment and follow-up care
PLTC's telephone lifeline can be accessed by anyone by calling 1-888-441-4439 (toll free outside the Albuquerque area). The lifeline provides confidential, informative and personal support in both English and Spanish if you have questions about a cancer diagnosis, referral, treatment options, support networks, etc. If you just need to talk, there is always someone at People Living Through Cancer available to talk with you.
The PLTC office at 3401 Candelaria NE Suite A, has a lending library of books, journals, videos and audiotapes that may be checked out in person.
