Support Group
PLTC currently sponsors many different peer support groups for cancer survivors, their family members and friends. There is no fee for attending support Groups.
Below you will find a listing of our current groups. Please look through the list and decide which of our groups you would like to visit. Once you have decided on a group for yourself or your loved ones, call the office for a referral to that group. At that time, you will be given all the information you need about the support group you have chosen. Factors such as time of the meeting, distance from your home, transportation, age, degree of emotional need, presence of persons with similar diagnoses and desired cultural perspectives can all be considered.
We encourage you to visit your chosen group(s) a few times to determine whether it will suit your needs. If the first group does not meet your needs, you may request a referral to another one of our support groups. The groups all have different personalities, determined by the individual members, each with a slightly different focus on the cancer experience.
If PLTC’s groups are not suitable, you may be referred to one of the other cancer support groups meeting in Albuquerque.
Our support groups are peer support groups. They are led by trained and compassionate facilitators who volunteer their time. Our facilitators have had some personal experience with cancer, have attended over 24 hours of specialized training, and want to contribute their time, energy and love to a community of people experiencing cancer in their lives.
More than 35 different support groups provide a safe, non-judgmental fellowship to share feelings and to obtain and provide information and emotional support through reassurance, encouragement and hope. We have groups for survivors, family members and friends; groups for men, women, breast cancer survivors, ovarian cancer survivors and those with various other diagnoses.
What is Survivorship?
- We define a cancer survivor as anyone who has received a diagnosis of cancer.
- Survivorship acknowledges the potential for quality living after a cancer diagnosis and encompasses all those touched by cancer, including survivors, their families, friends, work associates and health-care providers.
Confidentiality in Support Groups
- Everything said and heard in the group will be treated with respect for the group members’ privacy.
- Silence is acceptable. No one needs to say anything she/he does not wish to say. The group is supportive rather than judgmental.
- The group offers respect for individual choices and experiences.
- The group is not used to promote any product or any one approach to healing.
